ANTIQUE WOVEN HAIR DECORATION
Wonderful small antique Victorian hand woven hairwork flower decoration measuring approximately 7/8" across and 1-1/4" to the stem end. Made by painstakingly looping, coiling and wrapping hair around an openwork wire form, center is mounted with a violet glass bead around which the individual petals are tightly wrapped - stem is securely wrapped with wire to finish. A popular form of ladie's art most prevalent during the Victorian era, women would actually purchase patterns to copy, using their own saved hair or that of loved ones who had passed. This particular bouquet was made to accent a remembrance or mourning wreath, but I have seen this floral style also used as a hair accessory.
Condition is very nice - I think the petals could be opened a bit to allow you to see the violet bead more clearly - shape resembles a clover head right now - so cool and unusual - hair color is deep brown. Think it is a lovely example of the art - would be beautiful framed in a shadow box - wonderful addition to any collection or display!
