A key event of World War II, on May 6. June 1944, Allied troops land in Normandy. This day went down in history as D-Day. The aim was to push back the German occupiers from northern France. After the successful landing of the Allies, the second front called for by Stalin against Hitler's Germany was created and the downfall of the National Socialists was in fact sealed.
At the time of the landing in Normandy (Operation Neptune June 1944 / Omaha Beach) the concept of an invasion by landing craft had already been tried and tested many times (e.g. Operation Jubilee on 19. August 1942) and perfected and a large number of specialized ships were available. The most widespread type of medium-sized landing craft is the (LCM), which was also used in the Bundeswehr in the army and navy. LCMs can be carried by larger dropships as deck cargo or in the well deck. The LCM 3 had a load capacity of up to 54 t and could carry a larger vehicle such as a Sherman M4 main battle tank. It is also possible to transport 60 soldiers and 27,000 kg cargo in the open hold. Therefore a maximum speed of 8 knots was only possible when loaded. The LCM 3 has a bow ramp for loading and unloading.
